These Are the Best Day Trips near Hamilton

Hamilton has certainly made a name for itself as one of the more popular cities in Ontario to visit if you’re looking for a stunning mix of awesome hiking trails, delicious food, independently owned brands and beautiful waterfalls.

But did you know that there are nearby day trips you can make if you’re looking to explore slightly outside Hamilton’s city limits? Below, I’m listing a few of my personal favourites, where you’ll discover new tastes, sights and experiences!

Toronto’s Distillery District

This unique district in Toronto centres around a collection of industrial Victorian buildings which, over the years, have been transformed into a larger hub of buildings where you’ll find entertainment, food, and delicious craft beer! What’s great about this district is that it gives you a good feel for the tastes and unique aspects of a bustling city like Toronto, with a hint of history which makes this place so unique!

Elora Gorge

Elora as a township is a beautifully serene and quiet place to visit if you’re looking to get away from the hustle of city living, but it may just be the Elora Gorge which brings you here. The Gorge, known as one of the most beautiful, natural areas in the Grand River Valley, is host to Summer swimmers, music festivals, and outdoor recreational activities, but the rock formations and nature which abound are a photographer’s dream. Grab your camera and a pal (or two!) and head to the Gorge for a seriously stunning escape from the city!

Prince Edward County

If you’re the ambitious type who loves a day-long road trip, then Prince Edward County is the day trip for you! Featuring a lengthy toasting trail filled with cideries and wineries, PEC has a relaxed vibe where you’ll find great wine, cute lifestyle shops, and great views of the outdoors. It’s a 3 hour or so drive from Hamilton, but worth every minute (especially if you happen to love a glass of wine, or two!).

Crawford Lake Conservation Area

With a 1.4km long elevated boardwalk which will lead you through a forest and along beautiful lakeside views, Crawford Lake Conservation Area is an awesome day trip for anyone who enjoys spending time outdoors, rain or shine! Especially beautiful in the Fall with all of the Autumn colours, this Area features a jaw-dropping turquoise lake - a meromictic lake where the layers don't mix! This means the bottom layers have remained untouched; how cool is that?!

Forty Creek Distillery

Known for its infamous whiskey, you can actually tour the Forty Creek Distillery located in Grimsby! Grab a taste of their unique creations and tour the facility to learn about their methods and history!

The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada

Hang out with the donkeys for a day while donating to a wonderful cause at the Donkey Sanctuary! You can learn all about these unique animals and the work the Sanctuary does to help donkeys across Canada (and maybe get a kiss or two from a donkey!). This Sanctuary just to happens to be located on a beautiful farm property in Guelph!

Boxcar Social

With a low-key speakeasy vibe and delicious drinks, Boxcar Social is a must-see if you’re heading to Toronto for the day. The ultimate place to chill and socialize, Boxcar Social is perfect for taking pictures with friends, grabbing a unique drink, and resting your feet after a day exploring Toronto!
